Spunbonded Polyester

This week on the blog, we’re taking a closer look at another one of the fabrics manufactured here at Techtex Industrial. Spunbonded Polyethylene is in the spotlight this time, so read on to find out more about this flexible non woven fabric…

What is Spunbond Polyethylene?

One of Techtex’s wide range of versatile nonwovens is Spunbond Polyethylene.

It is a soft, light weight, inert material, ideal for medical and skin contact uses.

It is a nonwoven material manufactured by spunbond technology whereby Polyethylene chip is melted and extruded in continuous filments and spun out in a multi directional web before being heat sealed.

This gives it a uniform, strong but very soft material which is extremely cost effective and can be used across a range of industries.

What is Spunbond Polyethylene used for?

  • Ostomy and wound care
  • Medical
  • Any skin contact applications

For any medical or skin contact application, then Spunbond Polyethylene is the ideal material.

It has excellent chemical resistance, high strength and low water absorbtion. It is non-irritant and non-toxic making it safe for contact with skin and food.

It is widely used in the ostomy and wound care markets where it’s soft handle and stable properties make it ideal for this delicate medical application. It also has a low melt point making it easy to RF and heat seal.

What are the benefits of Spunbond Polyethylene?

Some of the most common uses for Spunbond Polyethylene are:

  • Packaging for laboratory and medical equipment
  • Ostomy bags
  • Disposable scrubs and lab-wear

When it comes to nonwovens, Spunbond Polyethylene is one of the toughest out there: able to withstand hospital sterilisation processes, this non-woven material offers excellent chemical resistance, high impact strength and low water absorbtion. Non-irritant and non-toxic, Spunbonded Polyethylene is safe in contact with skin and food.

It’s also highly recyclable, making it an ideal option for hospitals, care homes, laboratories and other organisations in the medical sector, where usability, hygiene and eco-friendly disposability are top priorities.

Nonwovens of this kind have plenty of benefits to offer manufacturers in the healthcare and other industries, including:

  • Low weight
  • Easy processing
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Good impact strength
  • Excellent electrical properties
  • Good barrier properties
  • Low water absorption
  • Toughness and flexibility, even at extremely low temperature
  • Safe for food contact and non-toxic for skin contact
  • No pre-drying requirements
  • Recyclability
  • Low melt point – easy to heat-seal
